Scott Ashton Porter, a native of Massachusetts, was born July 18th, 1978. Early on Scott found a passion for drawing which he did throughout his childhood until beginning his formal art education at Cheltenham College in England in 1994. He went on to earn a BFA at the University of Massachusetts, at Amherst focusing on painting and printmaking. Throughout the years of his education Scott had many opportunities to travel. He visited and /or studied in Egypt, France, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Netherlands, and Canada where he developed a broad perspective and appreciation for art visiting countless museums.
It was in 1999 that Scott first encountered flame working at the Queen City Lampworks in Manchester, NH. While continuing to pursue his degree he devoted as much time as possible to learning how to work with glass which was not offered as a subject in school. After graduating Scott took some time to travel within the U.S. to work in several different glass shops from Colorado, Utah, and Wisconsin to upstate New York, western Massachusetts, and eventually back to New Hampshire where he currently resides as an artist in residence at the Queen City Lampworks.
Scott has taught private lampworking lessons as well as classes through the Currier Art Museum in Manchester, NH, Snow Farm in Williamsburg, MA, and through his home studio at Queen City. He has exhibited his work at the Currier Art Museum, and also at some juried gallery exhibitions in Concord and Boston, MA. Scott also shows his work at a variety of crafts and music festivals throughout the country. In addition Scott has continued to further his education in glass, most recently studying with Loren Stump, and looking forward to attending the Glass Art Society conference in Portland, OR this coming June.
